Andy Hay, MD Ophthalmology
Dr. Hay has a keen interest in the health and well being of our community. He also has a keen interest in providing the highest quality of vision care to our patients. In addition to studying at some of our country’s most prestigious universities—including Johns Hopkins, Harvard and Princeton—he also trained extensively at some of our nation’s best ophthalmic hospitals. That training included a residency program and three additional fellowship programs. As a board-certified ophthalmologist, Dr. Hay specializes in small incision and no-stitch cataract surgery, glaucoma treatment, diabetic eye disease treatment, macular degeneration management, ophthalmic laser surgery, dry eyes treatment, comprehensive eye exams and contact lens exams. And as a Fauquier Health physician, Dr. Hay specializes in being a compassionate and supportive caregiver who understands the importance of putting our patients’ needs first.
Education and Training After earning his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1987, Dr. Hay completed the Harvard Medical School Cornea Research and Clinical Fellowship Program. At the same time, he also conducted research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Francis Bitter National Magnet Laboratory. Following, he completed the Framingham Union Hospital Internship Program, the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute (Miami University) Ophthalmology Residency Program, the University of California Vitreo-Retinal Fellowship Program, and the Center for Retina and Vitreous Surgery (Memphis) Vitreo-Retinal Fellowship Program.
Honors and Awards Among his many academic honors, Dr. Hay graduated magna cum laude from his undergraduate program in biology at Princeton University. He also was a National Merit Scholarship Finalist, and the recipient of a scholarship from the A Better Chance Program. In addition, Dr. Hay is currently a member of several professional organizations, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, and the Medical Society of Virginia.
Research Dr. Hay’s research findings have appeared in publications such as Ophthalmology, American Journal of Ophthalmology, and Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science. He has also published a book chapter on the types of pathogenetic mechanisms of retinal detachment.
Employment Dr. Hay joined Fauquier Health as a private practice physician with Medical Eye Care Associates in 1996. Prior to that, he was an ophthalmologist in Pennsylvania.
Personal Interests Dr. Hay is married and has two children.
