Douglas Markert, MD Interventional Radiology
Interventional radiology has been at the forefront of the medical movement toward minimally invasive, image-guided procedures, and Dr. Markert has been at the forefront of our efforts to provide these procedures at Fauquier Health. As an interventional radiologist for more than a decade, Dr. Markert specializes in everything from uterine fibroid embolization to tumor chemo embolization to peripheral arterial angiography. He was also featured in Oprah Winfrey’s O Magazine for an article about using ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy to banish varicose veins. Board certified in diagnostic radiology and vascular interventional radiology, Dr. Markert understands the importance of putting our patients’ needs first. That’s why he’s proud to work in a specialty field that results in less pain, fewer complications and shorter recovery times for our patients.
Education and Training After earning his Doctor of Medicine degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) in 1994, Dr. Markert completed the University of Maryland Medical System Diagnostic Radiology Internship and Residency Program and the Interventional Radiology Fellowship Program, where he trained at the world-renowned R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center.
Honors and Awards Among his many academic honors, Dr. Markert graduated cum laude from the University of Rochester undergraduate biology program, and made both the university and national Dean’s Lists. In addition, he received the Seward Scholarship and the New York State Regents Scholarship. While attending EVMS, he received honors in diagnostic imaging, radiology, biochemistry, internal medicine and numerous other subject areas. He also scored in the top 10 percent of his class on the radiology board examination. Dr. Markert is currently a member of several professional organizations, including the American College of Radiology, Radiological Society of North America, American Roentgen Ray Society and the Society of Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology.
Research Dr. Markert has conducted numerous research studies on radiology topics. His findings were published in the Journal of Ultrasound Medicine, Clinical Radiology and Academic Radiology, and were presented at annual meetings for the American Roentgen Ray Society, Association of University Radiologists and the Radiological Society of North America.
Employment Dr. Markert joined Fauquier Health as a private practice physician with Virginia Radiology Associates in 1999, right after he completed his fellowship program. Prior to medical school, Dr. Markert worked for the National Institutes of Health as a research biologist.
Personal Interests Dr. Markert is married, has four children, and enjoys exercising and camping.
