Edwin Kim, MD
Radiology

Technological innovations make radiology an exciting and expanding field, but we still rely on our radiologists to interpret medical images, identify and diagnose disease, and recommend the appropriate course of action for our patients. To help prepare himself for these important responsibilities, Dr. Kim completed specialized training programs in numerous areas, including diagnostic, vascular and breast imaging radiology. Triple board certified in diagnostic radiology, vascular radiology and interventional radiology, Dr. Kim knows it’s not enough for a radiologist to be knowledgeable and skilled. It also takes a high level of dedication and compassion to provide our patients with the best quality of care.

Education and Training
After earning his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine in 1987, Dr. Kim completed the Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh Internship Program and the Indiana University Medical Center Radiology Residency Program. Following, he completed the Massachusetts General Hospital Vascular Radiology Fellowship Program and the Johns Hopkins University Hospital Breast Imaging Fellowship Program.

Honors and Awards
Among his many academic honors, Dr. Kim was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa academic honor society. In addition, Dr. Kim is currently a member of the Radiological Society of North America, American College of Radiology, American Roentgen Ray Society and the Society of Breast Imaging.

Research
Dr. Kim has conducted research on: how chronic digitalis administration alters mesenteric vascular reactivity; and electrocautery of the tract after needle biopsy of the liver to reduce blood loss. His findings were published in Journal of Vascular Surgery and Investigative Radiology.

Employment
Dr. Kim joined Fauquier Health as a private practice physician with Virginia Radiology Associates in 2003. Prior to that, he was a staff radiologist for 10 years at hospitals in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland and Northern Virginia.

Personal Interests
Dr. Kim is married and has two children. In his spare time, he enjoys playing golf, reading and listening to music.

What is the difference between a Medical Center and a Hospital?

In general, a medical center oftentimes includes several types of health facilities, such as hospitals, medical schools, and research facilities. The focus is larger and not completely on patient care. Hospitals, on the other hand, are smaller and staffed with health care experts and are focused on patients’ treatment and health.
