Richard Swift, MD Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine
With over a decade of experience as a pulmonary and critical care physician, Dr. Swift is an expert at diagnosing and treating acute and chronic lung diseases. But he’s also an expert at diagnosing and treating sleep disturbances. As the director of the Fauquier Health Sleep Center, Dr. Swift supervises the technicians who administer the biological and neurological testing procedures performed during sleep studies. Board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine and sleep medicine, Dr. Swift understands that good communication between the patient and the health care team plays an important role in managing the conditions that aff ect the respiratory tract, and a patient’s ability to sleep. That’s why he spends extra time with his patients to explain the test procedures, listen to their concerns, and discuss the treatment options.
Education and Training After earning his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center in 1990, Dr. Swift completed the Georgetown University Hospital Internal Medicine Internship and Residency Program. Following, he completed the Brown University/Rhode Island Hospital Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship Program.
Honors and Awards Among his many honors, Dr. Swift is a member of the American Medical Association and the American College of Chest Physicians.
Research Dr. Swift has conducted research in C-type natriuretic peptide gene expression in hypoxia, and nitric oxide therapy in ARDS.
Employment Prior to joining Fauquier Health as a private practice physician with Pulmonary & Critical Care Specialists of Northern Virginia in 1997, Dr. Swift was a critical care admitting physician at Fairfax Hospital. Over the years, Dr. Swift has also served in various leadership positions at Fauquier Health, including the medical staff representative to the hospital’s Board of Trustees. In addition, he is a regular volunteer for the Fauquier Free Clinic and our Mini Medical School community lecture series.
Personal Interests Dr. Swift is married and has two children.
