Digital Mammography
Thanks to the many donors who have supported Fauquier Health’s digital mammography efforts! To date over $96,000 has been raised from the community, Fauquier Health employees and physicians.
Benefits of Digital Mammography
Digital mammography is more accurate than traditional mammography, and has proven to detect significantly more cancers (up to 28 percent more), particularly in:
- Women under age 50
- Women with dense breast tissue
- Pre- or postmenopausal women
Digital mammography administers lower doses of radiation to patients, requires a shorter exam time and offers the ability to correct under- or over-exposed pictures without having to repeat the procedure. Digital images can also be stored electronically, which eliminates the need for transporting films, and they can be retrieved electronically, which allows for easier long-distance consulting.
We’d like to extend a special thank you to Mr. James Atkins and the Cherry Blossom Breast Cancer Fund at the Piedmont Community Foundation for their additional gift of $20,000 this past year, bringing their total gifts to $50,000. Because of your generosity, we are happy to report that the installation of the two new digital mammography units began January 19th. After some remodeling of the mammography rooms and staff training, the digital units are scheduled to be in full operation by the week of February 9th. The Fauquier Health Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation benefiting Fauquier Hospital and supporting its mission.
